Ferrocium Firestarter Review
These pics include two magnesium firestarters that ive worked with. One of them is really good and the others not so much, and difficult to work with in comparison. The review will start off with the best one.
The first one is a simple one but really good, comfortable and gets the job done quickly. It is very easy to hold and grip. The rod itself has a good thickness to it and will spark rather quickly. Because it is not thin. It works much better and faster i find. Good tip to get a good one is to compare the rod size in the photo to the metal striker sold with it. It should be almost as big as the metal green striker. http://imgur.com/JyUiI.jpg The second set is not good. Looks like the first one, but has a really thin rod. This is why it is not good. The best way to tell the difference is to compare the rod in the photo to the metal striker sold with it. You can see that the rod thickness is about 30% the size of the green metal striker piece. So be careful not to buy it thinking its like the first one. http://imgur.com/OHYb4.jpg The third one is bad, its almost as good as a trinket. The rod is glued to the aluminum poorly. The compass dont work. The grip is horrible. The rod is very thin and hard to get a spark going. This is actually the main reason this fire starter is not good. The ferrocium rod is just to thin and it takes a lot of effort to get a spark. Sometimes you have to dig into with a knife. The metal striker sold with is, is sometimes hard to work with. And when the flints are generated they can be small. It is worser than the first one because the rod is thin, it has a poor grip and it is hard to generate flints with it. Also, sometimes it is advertised as a magnesium firestarter...leading you to believe that the metal part is magnesium that can be shaved and used as a firestarter. Its not. It aluminium. http://imgur.com/SlscT.jpg All of these can be found for as low as a dollar. But the shipping will be a lot. Sometimes the third one is sold for 5-6$ plus s&h. This is because it looks nice and has a design. My advice is to go with the first one, and compare the size of the rod not to get a knock-off version. |

Re: Ferrocium Firestarter Review
Ferrocerium is the same as Misch, right?

Its most common use is in the "flint" ignition device of many lighters and torches, although an alloy of only rare-earth elements would be too soft to give good sparks. For this purpose, it is blended with iron oxide and magnesium oxide to form a harder material known as ferrocerium. |
